    Who We Are...

mcemaWelcome to our site! Just what is the Meade County Emergency Management Agency?

The Meade County Emergency Management Agency (MCEMA) has been established and operates under the authority of Chapter 39 in the Kentucky Revised Statutes. Starting years ago as "Civil Defense" and later Disaster & Emergency Services or "DES". While "DES" is what many still call us- Emergency Management, is what we do.  Meade County Ordinances changed the name to reflect this in 1999.  The Director of Emergency Management is appointed by the County Judge Executive to oversee emergency management operations. Our current Director has had over 30 years of experience and dedication in serving our community in its time of need.

MCEMA is responsible for emergency preparedness achieved through hazard assessment, planning, mitigation, response, recovery, AND the exercising of these plans and responders. MCEMA coordinates State Emergency Response Commission (SERC) and KyEM training for our county, ourselves, responders and the community at large. State Law requires that our county EMA Director attend at least 32 hours of training each year to keep abreast of the latest advances and information.

trainingIt is our philosophy that disaster education and training is the cornerstone of true preparedness. To accomplish this, we will come to your school, club or organization and present programs on a variety of preparedness topics FREE OF CHARGE, just call us. We believe that an informed and prepared public is essential to complete the emergency management picture. This web site is a part of that picture.  We hope that you will find this a useful resource and will visit often to stay informed.  Here we have several pages discussing many aspects of emergency management.  From the hazards we face as a community to preparedness efforts YOU can make at home, work and school.  Our Downloads page has many useful documents and planning assistance tools to help you on your way. If you need more than we have here, we are just a call (422-2776) or an e-mail away. Our Kids Page has links to many different safe locations with activities to educate our children in safety and preparedness. Teachers and parents may also enjoy looking around at all of the information there.

One of the main roles of emergency management is the coordination of information. This web site is designed to extend that mission to all aspects of government and the public. We designed this site as a “One Stop Shop” for all things Meade County in both services and preparedness. Our menu on the left side of this page has listings for every county agency and department. We also list each city, our community volunteer organizations and the fire services in Meade County. Where they have an existing site, we link you direct to their site. Where needed, we have assisted them in having a page of information about their office or department to better enable our users of this site to quickly find important information at a minimum of effort. In this way, we can tell you what is bring done at the government and volunteer organizational level to better serve our citizens and to prepare Meade County overall.

YOUR siteWe want this to be YOUR SITE and are always happy to receive feedback, good or bad.  If we can do something to improve the site's usefulness to you, let us know.  Help us spread the word that the MCEMA site is up and running.  This site was introduced on July 2008.  Send the site address to friends and relatives.  If we prepare as a community for major emergencies and disasters, we will build a happier, safer community for ourselves and those who will someday choose Meade County to be their home.
